Cleaning the Commutator

What's the best way to clean the commutator without disassembling the motor up? Can I use a contact cleaner spray?

Yes, contact cleaner will work well. I personally use lighter fuel : its cheap.
Implied in your question, however, is the notion of having to clean the comm, between races or similar. Unless you have a nasty habit of over-oiling, this shouldn't be necessary. If the comm track has changed to a dark color, not just shiny copper, then it is reccommended to not only clean the comm, but true it as well. Up to that point, just run it as long as it holds it's speed. If your motor slows down, do the entire rebuild thing.
