Monty:
Hundreds of years ago we had an interesting conversation at the 80 Worlds at Sylmar about tracks, and how you were part of setup that track. That’s why I thought of you when I came up with this question
I know you are quite experienced at building and refurbishing tracks. My question is about surface preparation of a track for repainting. I’m familiar with the aspects of building and constructing of tracks. A Hassie Hillclimb track I helped build years ago needs to be resurfaced when planed to rebuild it soon. It has a light gray Epoxy surface presently. Fair condition needs only minor Bondo patches.
I would like some ideas which brand of epoxy or polyurethane would be best to resurface. I’m also curious to find out which color surface is preferred by racers. I am leaning towards Black but may have to stick to the gray. In my research not many companies make a black epoxy except for Rustolium Co. which makes every color under the sun. Cleaning the old glue off is the first obstacle. Your advice is appreciated.

Thought you’d also get a kick of this nostalgia picture from The worlds at Sylmar circa 1980.

Slapshot,
Great pictures. I caught the other 2 you posted on the other thread. How about some identification on some of those guys. I see Monty and Joel but what about the rest? Are any of them still in slots?

It would be great to start a thread with old pictures of some of the slot racing greats form the past and present. I am sure that Zippity and myself would really enjoy looking at them and I'm sure they would spark some great conversation.
Thanks

Raymond,
I'm ashamed to admit I don't recognize all of the folks in the photo either, but I can add some names!

Kneeling in front of P.A. (in the fancy hat) is Wyatt Williams. The bearded gent between Fred and Joel is Ron Ellner. Facing Joel (2nd man back) is Steve Bogut.

As a historic note, the 1980 Worls Championship is one of the few major wing races to have been contested on spray glue (the 1976 Nats is another). All the greasy hands in this photo (look close at Jon Laster, Tom Hansen - and my forehead!) come from cleaning the track so it could be freshly sprayed. This was done after the consis and again after the semis. As is normal for SoCal in July, it was HOT! The beer was a necessity...

Sorry Ray,
Forgot you asked a question, very distracted by the historic photo!

I'm still, after all these years, very fond of the 2 part water base epoxy from Rustoleum. As you note, it comes in many colors, its available at any Grainger catalog store, and has proven to be a rugged attractive surface over many years. I personally prefer black, but you do see more gray tracks around. I don't think it affects bite.

Before you bondo patch, scrape to bare wood. You might even consider a mild undercut using a dovetail bit to prevent any popping of the patch. After cleaning the track with a mild solvent such as naptha, do a final wash with acetone (lots of ventilation and no sparks!) until the stripes mush into the color coat. You will now get excellent adhesion to the new paint. Spot prime the bondo with white shellac, as well as any areas sanded through to bare wood. The old color coat is sufficient priming for large areas.

When done, the reccommended paint for stripes is Sign Painter's One Shot. Enjoy the project, but be careful and don't end up like me with a bum back!

The guy on the far left in the photo is Steve "Suds" Hosford, owner of West Seattle Speedway & Hobby, and Speedway & Hobby Too, which hosted the 1988 USRA Nats.

Old Weird Me - with or without hair, did not make it on that 1980 trip to Sylmar for the Worlds. I believe you also have a bunch of photos (I ran across some recently, and Rudy Garriga had a scrapbook full at the Nats this year) of photos from the Western States Champs at Hagginwood Raceway in Sacremento, sometime around then, where Alex Danilchik won the Pro Gp 7 title, and where we first met a 14 year old local hotshot named "Beuf". That race also inspired the 2nd rebirth of The Old Weird Herald, in the color printed version.

WSS&H is the track that just closed, after 37 years at the same location, and the former home of the Hasse Hillclimb track that Ray mentioned above and is secretly hiding away somewhere while rebuilding it for it's unknown secret future home.

Ray - stick with the grey epoxy! Black is way too hard for old geezers like me to see cars on!!!!

However... you might as well paint it INVISIBLE!!! How about letting us know what the heck is going on with that track! Is it going to find a new home any time soon, or is it going to stay hidden in your garage, or somewhere where only you get to play on it by yourself??? ;)

And Ray.... you spend WAY too much time on this board for the amount of time at the track!!!! When are you ever going to actually show up at a RACE, dude???? :D

Hey Paul,
Monty may have hit a nerve for a lot of racers. How about an OWH Archive section dedicated to all of those photos that make up slot history. People, places cars, etc. OWH is the natural place for this so get started before you do the IMCA race that JPVR is hasseling you about.

Gee Monty,

I seem to remember laying down my normal (for me that is :D ) amount of Bueatox Glue during the Pro main event at the 1976 Nats held at Joel's Race Place in Greenbelt, MA (aka: The Bi-Centennial Race). Held on our countries 200the birthday held on the fourth of July weekend. Also it was the first time the Nats was held that wasn't over the Labor Day weekend. Yes folks! The Nats use to be held over a weekend! :p
