i read on an RC site (rccaraction) and trinity came out w/ a "flatliner" motor. its wound with flat wire. i guess it produces more torque. has anyone in slots ever tried this? if you want the link, here it is. rccaraction (http://www.rccaraction.com/rc/stories/listhotnews.asp?webid=3&logo="/rc/images/stories/"&sgid=3)

Neal,

I finally got a chance to follow your link. The technology makes perfect sense to me, as a rectangular wire will have a minimal amount of air (ok, epoxy actually) between the windings. They will be closer to the blank, and you will be able to fit more in a given space.

The fascinating thing is that I had this very conversation with Stu Koford at the recent Div.I Nationals. His official position was that it was impractical due to difficulties with hookup to the com and crossing over from one layer to the next. Looking at the photo of the Trinity arm, I see that the wire isn't as flat as Stu and I were talking about. We had actual ribbon shaped stuff in mind.

If the Trinity motor starts blowing its competition away, we'll see it on Gr.7 motors soon enough!

Did you catch the picture of the arms?

I recall this wire started out in the Speaker Manufacturing industry years back. I had a short conversation with Bob Carver of stereo fame at a trade show about 8 years ago and he mentioned a flat magnet "ribbon" wire product they were looking into.

Here's a link to an interesting thread on one of the RC boards discussing the new Trinity D5 flat wire motors. Lot's of speculation on the arms, beginning with speculation as to whether Trinity even made them....

The jury in RC land still seems to be out as to whether they are an improvement over the existing round wires. Of course, the design points in RC are a lot different.
