Is the kelly open can good for 16D's?

Zach,
I'm going to presume that you mean the Kelly "D" can, since Kelly doesn't make a Group 7 setup.
I have one here at the shop, so I can tell you a bit about it, but I haven't track tested yet.
The major advantage of Kelly's D can is that it is approximately 4 grams lighter than Parma or Trinity D cans. The major disadvantage is that it will require considerable 'blueprinting' before it is track worthy. As I received it, the magnets didn't fit with a legal airgap, there's excess paint on the inside surfaces, and the bushings were not installed.
The major unknown factor in the setup is the magnets, which are substantially different in shape compared to the other D magnets.
If you are not experienced in straightening and aligning motor setups, DON'T start with this one.

Monty is being very generous when describing the blueprinting problems with this can. I just finished doing two and they are very hard to work with. Monty has already told you that there is excessive finishing material on the inside, which must be removed, and the magnets cannot be inserted with the proper airgap with considerable modification from their original form. The bottom of the can on both of the ones that I have done were improperly bent and required a lot of straightening before inserting the oilite. Both setups came with the wrong plate for the brush hoods and I had to use Mura brush hood plates, which fit very well. ProSlot plates will also work, since they are the same as the C-Can. I also switched magnets to Gold Dots, which fit, but must be installed carefully. I built these for the new RJR Large Diameter arms and achieving a .580 airgap with the .558 arm was not a problem. Upon testing this evening at Indy Slots, they ran great! Time was actually faster that a regular S16D, so we will see this weekend at Raceworld if they are competitive.
