can someone please tell the name (description) of the diode mounted on the transistor on a Difalco Controller?
(I can't read it without unmount it)

Thanx!

I beleive it is a 1N5401 or MR501 or Equiv.? The generic spec is 3A, 100V Min, fast recovery Diode. Jim would know for sure but I do not see a problem with the generic device as a replacement?

Can a higher amp diode help the longevity any? I have "upgraded" the 3 amp to 6 amp and the companion resistor wattage as well. They seem to last longer and take shorts better without further damage. Logic would have it to use the cheapest (not neccesarily the strongest) parts in production.

I use 6A diodes and the cost difference is minimal. You can use a MR752 or equiv. The size of the parts still allows it to fit inside the heat sink.

The diode performs reverse polarity protection for the power transistor and conducts untill the fuse opens. The higher the non- repetative peak surge current (400A) the better.
