Here's the deal: I have a couple pair of Parma wheels that I'd like to make inserts for, using cut-down Fly wheels (like their Ferrari, Lola, or Porsche wheels). These Parma wheels have an inside diameter of about 7/16 (.437), which scales up to just a hair under 14".

After I do the surgery to the Fly wheels, will what's left (probably just the spokes) make a decent insert? I've never tried this before, but I think it would make a reasonable facsimile of a 60's 15" wheel. Any input is appreciated (before I order more stuff).

BTW, this would make a great how-to by Larry Shepard, don't you think?

This is a Ninco Classic wire wheel, turned down to.375 to fit one of my rims, you could turn it to any Dia.to fit the wheel of your choice.

The Knock Off is an old Monogram one.

Here's a Fly Lola T70 insert cut down the same way.

This is an Atlas Brabham insert, thinned down to open up the spokes, was previously solid between the spokes.

Anything is fair game for inserts Larry. I use a lot of the fly wheels as inserts. I use mainly old HTK, ALpha, etc. wheels with the wide Euro hubs and full width hubs as they have a nice .450 inner diameter which is a little bigger and leaves more room for more of the Fly wheel. I happen to have a lathe to mount them in to cut them down, But have done it in a pinch in a hand drill with a knife and file or a sanding disk in a dremel tool. They make nice inserts. Much better as inserts than as wheels. I like the full width hubs as then I can cut them down from the out side in to make them the right width tire for the car I am building. The of course they get the silicone coating treament. ;)
