i built a new super 16d motor today, and i ran it under water for 45secs. after i looked at the com and it was dirty. why is this?

You have me mystified, as I've never seen that happen. I'm presuming you've used either Golddust or Bigfoot II brushes, and that you ran the motor at no more than 4 volts. I'll also hope that the comm was freshly trued to begin with.
On rare occasion, I've left a motor running in the water way too long (as in, took a phone call and forgot!), and while the brushes were worn away, the comm was still clean!

I use tap water myself. I wouldn't want to think badly of Kiwi water - I've shared enough meals with Radisich to know he can stand the So-Cal variety :-)
What if you sprayed the motor with electronic/motor cleaner? i bet the brushes would be seated and the comm would be clean...just as if it wasn't black to begin with.....

I have broken in a couple of Parma s16d (502) motors in water. I left in the stock brushes and in about 20 sec the water was muddy and the brushes worn in and down. I cleaned the motor and it was fine and ran strong. Maybe some brush/water combinations just create mud. If it works in the end it must be ok so I still do it that way.

Lighting,
never run in any sealed chinese 16-D, or S-16D motor in water.
Your findings are why, the brushes in the stock setup on these motors are too soft to do this.
I think Chicky has stated the same thing in his forum.
I just use my radius tool on the brushes, and run em' in you as long as it takes (at 3-4 volts) to get the brushes fully seated.
This can take 30 to 80 min.
Of course you want to make sure the motor is not over heating during this process.
Just my 2$.

To make you go really fast, you should drink the break in water afterwards. Your Zen will then become one with the motor
