About a month or so ago, OWH began to get bombarded with new registrations who were then posting SPAM messages, or links to web sites - mostly porn.

It was hard for all of the moderators to keep up with deleting and banning the Spammers, so finally I had to switch off the automatic registration.

It has stopped the Spam posts, however, I had hoped it would stop the Spammers and they would go away.

We are now getting hundreds of new registrations every day, and it is often nearly impossible to tell the "real" ones from the Spammers, as they just get burried.

So - if you are new to OWH and you would like to register to post and participate on OWH Slot Car Talk, then unfortunately I need to ask that you take a few extra steps so that I know you are an actual slot car enthusiast and not a Spammer, and then I will manually activate your registration.

If you want to register, please do 3 things...

1 - DO NOT try to register with a user name that sounds like a porn star or other sexual innuendo. Yes - we do have a few "clever" user names used by actual slot car racers here - but they were here before the Spam attacks.

2 - Fill in your Profile information when you register. You MUST include something that indicates "slot cars" in your interests, and the more slot car related info the better.

3 - Email me at: paulk@oldweirdherald.com. Tell me your REAL NAME, where you live, the raceway where you race at (or club or home track) and BE SURE to tell me your USER NAME you registered under (it also helps if you email me from the email account you registered under). Basically - give me enough info so I know you are a slot car enthusiast and not a SPAMMER.

Put "SLOT CAR TALK REGISTRATION" (or at least something with "slot car" in it) in the SUBJECT LINE of the email. Emails with NO SUBJECT hit the trash, along with about 5,000 others PER DAY!

You would not believe the number of emails I get saying "Hey why can't I post???" and not even telling me their user name.

Thanks for your help and understanding. I am literally burried now in SPAM, and I do welcome any and all slot car enthusiasts to partisipate in this online community here at Old Weird Herald Slot Car Talk.

:)

My PC is down, and right now I do not have access to my oldweirdherald email account...

So if you need to email me to get your username activated, please email me at: virtualend@earthlink.net.

I NEED TO KNOW YOUR USER NAME - in order to activate you.

And please put something in your profile with the word "slot cars" in your interests...

Sorry about the computer, I still have several formerly knowen as B/S loaners.

Good to hear about the registration action as its been frustrating for several new members.

notearoonie.....If you get a Team Spam entry its is a local NW racer so not all spam is spam. Why do I have an urge to make spam, ham and eggs.
I encourageged seven new members last month (or two) who are waiting. They followed the proceedure and had slot car in thier id as I moniterd their registration while online.

They will be contacting you.again....

You may want to consider a Human interface question registration change....more infor on VB web forum
In the mean time to eliminate spambots and also Yahoo Slurp spider atacks try these suggestion from Vbulliten about a recapatcha fix:

Hello OWH blog racers and moderators

I'm for real. Just ask anyone on SlotBlog! (am I allowed to use that word??!)

My name is Mark Wampler from Santa Maria, California. I race at Foster's Raceway home track. I'm known to show up at PCH in Oxnard and Buena Park Raceway as time and circumstance permits.

I first started racing slot cars in 1965. Everyone should own at least one Cox Chapparal in their lifetime. I like to race all things scale, but nothing with wings. My focus as been Retro (D3) racing and scratchbuilding. I already see some familiar names, so while I've known about OWH for quite a while , recent events have encouraged me to join up. I promise to behave, but I tend to push the envelope sometimes. While the slot car hobby is often plagued with politics and grandstanding, I'm sure that acceptance of varying vewpoints are considered while maintaining respect and common courtesy. So..... I look forward to engage in shop talk, tuning tips along with a little intrique and occasional mild drama.

Sincerely,

-Mark Wampler
