Wow, what a great main event.
Congratulations to all of you.
Especially Jim Post. Hey Jim, you drove your
heart out and really earned your spot in the
main. Great driving.

You mean that for the next year we're gonna have to listen to Doug tell us that even the Pope couldn't break the top 3 at Port Jeff !!!!!

Hi Ed, how's it going. Gonna have to try to hook up with you one of these days, don't think I've seen you since I borrowed one of your cars at Nutley and moved form the Z consi only to miss the main by a lap or two.

Hey Gil,

Are you coming down to the Barnburner at all this week?
I seem to remember that race at Nutley.

Lots going on right now, I won't make it to the Barn Burner but if the old phart enduro ever goes off (and it fits around my Casino schedule) I'll be there. Port Jeff is about 3 1/2 hours for me each way, too far to just visit. A few years ago I would have thought nothing of it, I was putting something like 3,000 miles a month on my car going to Port Jeff, Queen City (New Hampshire), Modelville (Mass.) Grand Prix (Schenectady) and on and on........ Just burned out, despite rumors to the contrary there was no one event that did it, just lost the fire. I try to catch some of the closer races around here, but their schedules seem kind of odd.

BTW, every once in a while I see some of the old boys - Russ Boyington still lives in the same town with Deanna but wants nothing to do with slots. Jim Birritta stopped in the raceway I worked at a few years back, visited for 10 minutes then bugged out. What I can't get over is that damned Flash guy... still looks like a kid while I look like an old phart.:D :D

The International Slot Car Terrorist, known as "Old Weird Herald" has arrived on Long Island, via stretch limo and under heavily armed guard, to cover the festivities known amongst slot car racers as "The Barnburner".

OWH's infamous "Almost Live" coverage will commence with tonight's GTP 12 and Eurosport events.

Stay tuned - don't touch that dial - film at 11.

Hey Paul. The #1 hillbilly will be arriving tomorrow. After the Gt 12 race tonight could you get me a pit space saved up on the first or second table where I normally pit? Thanks in advance.............Hillbilly.......Benny

Now that the OWH Long Island Field Office is set up and in bizness, the OWH Pit Space Hogging Service can begin taking bids for premium pit space locations.

Special Reserved Space for Hillbillies is currently fetching an added premium fee. That special service may cost ya a table dance for this Old Weird Dude at the nearest naughty night spot, and I don't mean by you! :D

Hey 152 - PM me your arrival info and what airport, airline, etc. and I'll see what I can do.

Do you have a room reserved yet? Need a roommate??? I snore really loud, but practically never sleep... major night owl.

If you wanna chip in on a rental car, we can try to find the party spots on this long slab in the ocean.

Lemme know by PM.

Wondering if you can try and keep the MIDGET out of trouble. Don't let him get to close to the Hurricane or The Bull Dog! Say hi to everyone for me, I wish I was there!

There's a couple of feet of snow on the ground, but these Long Islanders just plow the roads and it's back to bizzness. It's blue sky and sunny out now, but a tad nippy out even for my Northwest blood.

John,

I'll relay your congrats to Brad, as he could use some chearing up. He made an incredible come-back drive after blowing a motor, to only miss winning by less then a lap!

Dennis L also made a come-back drive after spinning a pinion to take 3rd, but Kenny stayed out of trouble and held off a hard charge by Brad in the last heat, with Kenny on Black and Brad very fast in Yellow, to barely hold on for the win.

Very exciting race to watch!

Final Results

The printer jammed and only the top 3 laps were remembered, so unless or until the data is recovered, here's what I have:

1 - Benny Justice - 585
2 - Greg Mills - 570
3 - Spove - 569
4 - Larry Blanton
5 - Keith Keeler
6 - Gugu
7 - Boyt Johnson
8 - Les Wright

Benny checked out in this one, having a nearly flawless race. The real race was for 2nd as Greg Mills barely held off Spove by a slim lap. The rest of the field had their struggles, and at 6 AM most of us were practically sleep walking. Gugu was actually taking a nap between heats. Boyt & Les had their own competition for who could have the most problems, but I don't think Les ever did figure out exactly what was wrong with his car.

I split in a hurry after the awards as several of us crammed into Chicky's compact rental car to hitch a ride to the Terryville Motel for a few hours of MUCH needed sleep.

White - Kenny Piccola
Green - Benny Justice
Orange - Erkle
Blue - Keith "bOkeifus" Bauer
Yellow - Jason Bauer
Purple - Joey S
Black - Alan Cohen

4 - Joey S - 505
5 - Kenny Piccola - 501
6 - Benny Justice - 500
7 - Keith Bauer - 467
8 - Alan Cohen - 384

This race REALLY lived up to the name - it really was a BARNBURNER!!! Keith, Jason, & Erkle were on the same lap for the lead for the last two heats, with the lead changing frequently. Keith was on top, then Jason put on a charge to take over, then Erkle poured it on. With 1 minute to go, Jason held a slim 1 lap lead over Erkle, and it appeared like his motor was slowing. Suddenly it seemed OK again, and he held off Erkle to take the win.

I manage to avoid the snow up there...and I look outside this morning and there is about 8 inches here...which is a lot for us...especially since we have like 3 snow plows in the entire city

Yo Paul wake up!!....whats going on up there?

did this actually turn into the "Almost Sober" coverage?

oldweirdherald
02-23-2003, 02:04 PM
Hey, gimme a break - I was up all night cuz my helper stayed home to make snow angels and play with the snow bunnies!

I finally made it to the room this AM and slipped into a coma. They're in the Gp 27 A Semi now, so I'm playing catch-up on the results and will have them typed in a bit.

You should have come, you weenie! Even if you had taken the flight that arrived at 10:30 Friday night - they didn't even start Cobalt 12 PRACTICE until after midnight... you would have been here in plenty of time.

Besides... nobody else here wants to go anywhere besides the raceway, so I may never know what the Long Island night spots have to offer.

I did get out to dinner last night with the Florida guys - Frank, Lorin, Ricardo, along with Forrest & Gugu. We went to JR's Steak House, where the guys devoured steak & lobster while I had a humongous filet of Salmon. No hangover here though, I only had one beer.

well as much as I wanted to be there...I had a really bad week...and the airline screwing me was just the perfect capper

anyway....after the FCR race lastnight....I got a call from a couple of Tri-Delta girls wanting me to go party with them....I had a damn good time....think I am almost sober now :D

Oh well...hey...plug the Tulsa race coming up next month...that was supposed to be my job

it sounds like it is going to be a huge race...Beuf wants his total lap world record back...he seems to think that Tulsa is the place to do it

Think PA is coming back to defend it though

20 cars teched in for the Pro Group 7 race at The Barnburner, and the buzz during qualifying was about Chicky's "guarentee" to cut a low 1.5 second lap.

In the first round, Chicky got everyone excited with a 1.632 that looked promising, but everyone was waiting for the bye round.

Chicky didn't dissapoint, as he stepped up and fired off a blistering 1.613 second lap for a new King Track World Record!

This cuts the previous record set by P.A. Watson at the Buena Park 2002 Nats of 1.624.

I have 3 floppy disks of the Group 12 racing that somehow refuse to load on my laptop's floppy drive. I believe they will work from another PC, so I've asked bOkiefus to upload them from his house, but he forgot them last night and has been busy racing today.

I'll never use Memorex floppies again, as the Sony disks seem to work fine.

I wasn't able to be on-line in real time this year, in fact I just read the whole thing tonight (Sunday, after midnight west coast time) and damn! The excitement was just as intense, even with a delay of a couple of days.
It had my palm sweating, as I scrolled through the threads, heat after heat, with color commentary, picturing my friends in my mind's eye, giving it everything they had. Congrats to everyone, wish I was there (my home!)

Totally awesome coverage, Paul.

What a weekend.

No sleep, too damn much pizza and did I mention not enough sleep??

Seriously now, a great event as usual pulled off by the best in the biz.....Port Jeff Raceway and all of the staff therein.

For myself, I have to say that I raced fairly well considering the sleep and pizza induced disadvantages. It was a kick to make that 27 main and even be in the hunt for a podium spot for a while.

I WILL change my lead wires after every quarter and semi from now on......thanks to Benny J. for straightening me out on that score and fixing my car under green so quickly....a lesson learned I guess.

Thanks also to Les Wright for not burying me in the wall in that last heat of the 27 semi...that was as close as it gets. I have to admit though that if the tables were turned, Les might still be picking MDF splinters out of his car as we speak....:D

As far as the GP7 race is concerned, I almost made that main too, but looking back on it, I would have been a babe in the woods and probably caused some trouble for those more accomplished in that area.

It was a pleasure (if not a bit scarey) to race on the track with the likes of Chicky, Greg Mills and Larry Blanton though and I was glad to see Skinner move up in my place, this is HIS race afterall, and I can't think of anyone I would rather have lost that spot to. Besides, I think if I nerfed Bill in the finger one more time he would have had me assassinated....LOL.

Anyway, time to catch up on sleep, eat absolutely NO pizza for a few weeks and get back to life as it exists in real life.

Thanks Doug and everyone else that stopped by to race, shoot the breeze and especially Chris Schaffer for some great and lengthy pit help in the 27 race and Evan Petrakis for some great motors.

See you next year.

What a great race.

First, I would like to thank Doug for putting on a great race.
All of the races were extremely competitive and everyone
was helping each other out. This is what it is all about. Congratulations to all of the winners and everyone who
who had an opportunity to race this past week. I would
also like to thank Erkle, Doug, Charlie, Skinner and Hurricane
for helping myself and Jonathan put together a great boxstock
program over the past 10 months. Also, great race directing
by Dreama and Doug. Special congrats to Henry for finishing
2nd in Am. Box (Great Driving). Also special congrats to Lucky
who has had a rough couple on months and finished 5th in the
Am. Box main (ripped a 62 on orange). Great driving. Most of all,
I would like to thank my son Jonathan. If it weren't for him,
I probably would not have come back to the slots. I am really proud of him for driving his heart out to finish 4th in his first
Am. Box Barnburner. Oh yeh, special thanks to Derek and Joe
S for helping us. Derek is on a real tight budget and yet he offered
Jonathan his race motors for the main. Last but not least, thanks to all of the sponsors. The payout and prizes was fantastic.
Hope all who traveled from afar got home safe.
Now, on to the next race.

The Barnburner was a hell of an event. Credit goes to all that put effort into the event. Although Erkle didnot have the same steller performance that he did in the NE Nats (I think that the new born has a little to do with it), but still showed lots of fight.

Johnathan Sohl, I have been told time and time again you are a version of your father, you will be a champion in no time. All you need is patience. It took me two years to win my first big event and it will not be my last. You are an excellent driver, all you need is time and a chance to improve. I really would have enjoyed racing you in the main but luck ran out for me as I have not missed a main since the 2000 NE Nats. That was 2 1/2 years ago. There will be a next time for us and we will run together.

Johnny "C", Congrats kid on your final barnburner kids group 10 win. Both of us didn't make it. I know you wanted to run with me badly. I always have fun racing with you and BSing with your dad. You guys are great people.

George JR. Dont worry about the motor I lent you. I will replace it and it will be faster than ever. You will make a main but for now just start making improvements.

Edsel. Man you are a great racer, competitor, friend. You kept a smile on my face the whole weekend. Helping you this weekend was a no brainer, I wanted to see your son a thte top and he stayed my top pick the whole race. He is going to be a great racer like you someday.

Ricardo. Great win man. You deserve it. You kept the Barnburner winning streak to two in a row as last year i took TQ and win and you did too. Nats is going to be hard this year with competition like you.

Last but not least the "Bent one". Thanks for the help this weekend. Exept for the few, no one was attempting to help me this weekend. You let me put a big amount on tab to make this race and you never took any other answer but yes. Sorry I couldn't make it today to work but with the buzz all around here about PM rain and possibly it freezing over, I couldn't risk it. I will pay you back. I dont know how but I will. Tomarrow I will not be able to make it either. My mom is sick and my dad has to work so I will have to be staying close to home to tend to her. I will try to come on friday, If there is anything you want me to do. Do a party, clean the raceway, run a race, paint bodies, build or repair cars, let me know. My services are indeded(sp?) to you.

I am back, I will rebuild and try some new stuff.

ET,
You should cut him some slack considering he's running an old obsolete chassis and an old obsolete can (which doesn't have the bend-o-matic option)

ET - That's just a regular straight pin, the kind that is used for sewing. You can order them from the Chris Gomes Sewing and Notions catalog.......

Hey, at least no L brace on the rear pin tubes this time... ;)

Bent,

I heard a story about how no one could get any sleep when they shared a room with Coach Beaudreaux at the Louisiana Coaches Convention in Opelousas. It was 4 days long so they drew numbers and took turns. On the last night it was young Coach Thibodaux's turn. The next morning he was all refreshed and rested which prompted the others to question how he did it. He replied just before turning out the lights he went over to Coach Beaudreaux and gave him a goodnight kiss on the lips. Ol Coach Beaudreaux didn't snore the whole night........he wasn't about to go to sleep for fear of what else the young coach might do.

Bent,

Just having a laugh..........not going to be a matchmaker and not going any further. Cajun humor is the greatest and much funnier when told by one dem. I grew up "way up north" in Shreveport, Louisiana. It's downwind from Dallas and I lived there for 40 years and have been in Tennessee for the last 13.......so I'm messed up for life. If you could put together a deal to have the NATS in New Orleans it would be one everyone would remember the rest of our lives.

Have a good weekend,

If we do it in time for Mardi gras, who would care about racing? I went to Mardi gras at the age of 15 with my older brother. Changed my life!!!!!!!! Maybe thats why I wear those hats!;)

ET,
Pin length is an issue with you???? You should be glad the USRA didn't take a tough stance & allowed people to fix their broken chassis with PIANO WIRE and make the car stiffer.
My guess is you'll eventually encourage your chassis maker to start making a
brittle model so you can break/piano wire tune them.

What about the body staples! Chicky lost a body staple and Erkle found it! This cheap open racing is costing me a small fortune. Koford 6 mag and saw cut arm is reduced to junk! Our best open motor! Funeral is today!!!!! Rather then sending flowers, please send segments.;)

I guess, I no longer have to bring a hammer to the race's anymore. I think the GTO is stiff enough, no pins needed. I heard a rumor that GTO is going to make the ACE 1 chassis next. With the material he use's, it should make for a great chassis!!!!

I would like to say thank you to the five racers that were in the main in AM box-stock that used the GTO Chassis.

Also a big thanks to Brad and Larry for running GTO's Chassis in Pro-Box Stock.

I would also like to say thanks to Doug for tipping my hand for the next GTO box-stock that will be out at the end of this month, USRA will have them for approval for 2004 by Tax day.

THanks to all from GTO High-Tech
