View Full Version : Floating Pins
I would like to know if there is any advantage for floating body pins specially in wing car racing as against fixed body pins? We race wing in light spray glue condition.

I found that floatig pins can help in tight turns but is slower in longer banked turns

Floating body mounts are still in use on wing car chassis in situations where the track might be older or in poor condition.
Regardless of the glue conditions, if your track is smooth and fast, you should be able to get away with solid mounts all around.
Try floaters in just the front or rear too, sometimes that's a good combination.
Something that I've tried recently and like is the use of oversized pin tubing in the front of the car. With this I have the floating thing going on, but the whole thing is easier to build and a heck of a lot more durable.
The stainless side rail tubing found in ZAP International 15 kits works great for this.
The only requirement of using this system is the fact thay you'll need to bend the pins over and clip them off on the inside of each front mount and flip the body over the front of the car in order to do a motor change.
This takes some getting used to, but makes for faster motor changes in the long run since you're only fooling around with two pins between heats.
I can't take credit for this idea as it was shown to me by the now MIA Carlos Aloise of ACE products.

Hi Weedracer!
Thanks for the input. Based on your experience when would it be best to have the front pins floating and likewise for the back pins?
You know sometimes I find it more complex to set-up a wing car competitively for light glue racing than a GT-12.

As I said, if your track is smooth, forget the whole thing.
If it's a bit funky, experiment, this is the kind of thing that can easily be done at trackside if you're prepared.

In Group 12, you must use either floating or fixed based on how they come from the manufacturer, no? That's why we started making the holes in the body slightly larger than the diameter of the pin so that the body itself had a "shaker" action, rather than the part of the chassis it was mounted to.
You can float the rear pin tube of any boxstock (group 12) chassis, as long as the pin mount is in the same location as it is meant to be! and you must have fixed solid pin mounts in the front, but can use oversized pin tubes as weedracer mentioned!

Or, could you just run a piece of fishing line through the small tube and tie it off? Unless of course that falls under "If it's not mentioned it's not legal"..... :)
I haven't raced Group 12 (then boxstock) in several years, I'm curious when the rules were changed. Was that something that was voted in or an executive decision? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just something that escaped me (yeah, like that's something new).
