I recently read the setup articile in slotcar bulletin, and this chassis sounds like it may be an improvement over my turbo flex for a outlaw nascar class I race in. Has anybody out there done any testing on a king yet?

ive helped test the chassis on a flatter king thats now in rochester, ny. The chassis takes a lot of tuning to get right and you have to learn to drive it, but it can be a very good setup. On a high-banked king I would imagine the scorpion3 to be one of the chassis to beat. The chassis doesnt take a very good hit and sometimes needs mid-race tuning. It's very light and fast but is a risky car to race. Just my opinions...

I have tried racing a Scorpion 3 already and my biggest problem at 1st was it was tipping in the corners. I added some weight on the rear of the side pans and it handled much better. But for a nascar body I would not worry about the tippng because of the low downforce that the body produce.

Try different adjustments on the bite bar, the little set screw blocks. Plus you can loosen or tighten the lock nut/screw at the front. I started mine at about 1/8" gap on each side and since I use it mainly on a tri oval I made the gap larger on the outside. That seemed to help. One of the best features of this chassis is being tunable, its the 4wheel steering effect. Plus it's very light.
When I ran it on the big hillclimb at Inyslots, I had to readjust everything, but then it handled really good. This is my favorite car now, with a super wasp motor and an audi body, its a well balanced car.
Also, you may want to experiment with different type/size tires, big and small hub until you find the right combo. I use Parma big full hub .765 tires on mine. I plan on using the BIR tires on it soon, they look like a real high quality tire.

i run the BIR tires on my superwasp/ l.m.p. and they are really good on a clean track. but... if the track hasn't been cleaned and re-glued recently, those tires are really loose. this is mot just isolated to one set, either. i have 4 sets of them and they are ALL the same way.

Thanks for the feedback guys.I think I will pick up a couple and give them a try. The local class I run in has no minimum rear tire size, only track clearance rule, so I usually lower the rear axel in the chassis so that it will tech with .650 rear tires that should help with the tipping, and it sounds like I needs to cum up with a way to bullet proof the front wheel assembly. Where can I find new and old slotcar bulletins. I looks like it has a lot of useful information.

You said that you lower the axle but sill maintain the chassie clearance. How will that change the handling? How do you get the spur gear to clear? Running tires that small must really mess up your final gear ration. I dont see a reason to change the axle height by that much. The car will sill have the same ride height and will handle the same except for a little bit less weight in the back.

My scorpion 3 cars handle great with 1/8" play on the sides of the bite bar and 3/32" x .765 tires with regular oilites. I have changed the spur a couple times for different tracks, as long as you have required clearance. If you want it lower you might have the raceway true the tires down a little at a time to get the height you want. Of course, some time running laps will just wear the tires down and is a lot more fun.
The BIR tires are a little firmer than , say parma tires, so they seem a little sensitive to dirt on the track. If I was racing on a freshly cleaned & prepped track for an important race, they are what I would run.

Bartx 7000 By lowering the rear axel and running .650 rear tires the rotating mass has a lower center of gravity(LESS TIRE ABOVE CENTERLINE OF AXEL)I set the chassis up so it will just pass tech at.065 clearance, with normal tire wear the tires are at .625 by the end of the race. A new 36t 64p polymer spur measures .590 so you still have .015 spur clearance at end of race. The small tire small spur combination make for a very aggressive final drive ratio and creates a very low very responsive car that handles well!! Along the same idea as 35and 40 series tires on large diameter wheels on real road race cars (less side wall rubber means better handling and less rotating weight for motor to pull) resulting in faster acceleration out of cornors. It may sound crazy but it works for me and I WIN!!! If it is LEGAL at your track to lower axel height , give it a try you, you will like it ....TP racing out

Evidentally, there is a better way to set up one of these chassis. Different from the instructions. Maybe Larry K. could explain it better.

head to the hardware store and purchase fatter o rings for the front this will stop the tipping john

Try loosening the front screw- the one holding the two parts of the pan together- that should loosen the handling up. The elastic stop nut allows you to do that w/o the thing falling apart.

Most of the rulemakers say that you can use ANY spacer on stamped steel chassises. Keeping the hose bar loose was a real trick until we started using a small O-ring (006) in between the two frame pieces in place of the nylon washer. Solder the Lock nut to the center section and just start to squeeze the o-ring so that it can still rock or pivot on the bolt.!!! The Instruction sheet was as- new - design and before everyone started to tune the chassis. Instead of the set collars inside - put the outside the centersection to enhance the rocking motion. I you have only minimal movement here, it changes the character of handling - some like it - some not. It is not the same feel as a Champ or Cheetah . By the way, if you have a lot of problems with bent rear ends on the Scorpian, look for the Center sections in SS soon. JK is going ALL Stainless Steel for 2003! Less bending for all sections - a special flux is available for soldering motors and SS pinions in. Check your local welding supply store or JK Products..
