I'm putting together my first GTP car. I've soldered together a Slick7 Asp III chassis. I need to know which can setup to use for the motor. I have several ProSlots with various magnets. Do I want to build for RPM or torque? I haven't tried it yet, but I have a can with quads honed out to .535". Is that too much magnet for the Champion arm? Should I use SMQ's or something like that?

Gary, the motor choice depends on the track more than the chassis. What type of track is this for?

It all depends on the track like dan said, but i would build a couple of each regaurdless and test them out. And keep the ones that may not work on your track for traveling if you do any. I would suggest starting with a kelly can and mura mags, but the proslots are good too. I use mura mags and a proslot arm. I like torquier 12s but they can be harder to drive at times. Just my opinions...

USRA Racing does not allow quad magnets,or magnet honing at all.
The Kelly is the lightest setup, and Rezapped and Matched Mura magnets are going to probably be the best working deal for you.

We run on a 150' Engleman style track using power supply power at 13.5 volts. We don't follow USRA rules specifically and do allow the quads and honing. I'll give this setup a try, and I will build a Kelly can with blue dots to try as well.

The quad setup might work, try it of course (since you already have it!) but it sounds like an awfully big gap to me. If I was to build something to come and race with you guys I would use a light Kelly can with a big Mura bushing, Proslot matched mega bluedots (singles) epoxied in and honed to .525, a Proslot endbell and hardware (the Kelly endbell is great but can be a bitch to align), a 45 degree, .514 diameter Proslot arm, gold dust brushes and champion springs.
The mill would have gobs of torque so I'd gear it 9/37 to start with .760 tires and adjust from there. It would be a handful, but all the Englemans I've run on were pretty easy to drive - I think I could handle it! :)
Only problem might be amp suck, in which case a Lee Gilbert motor might be the hot setup, he's the powerpack expert!
