One of the handiest tools in my slot car tool box is a Vargus hand chuck / pin vise. It is especially usefull for building motors IMO. These are sometimes hard to find and are usually nearly $20 each from any source.

I just got the latest MSC sale catalog and noticed that they have this tool on sale at a serious discount: $12.99 versus their normal $18.97 price.

MSC's part number is SN06491906. Go to www.mscdirect.com and search on that number. (I was going to post the link but it ran four lines!) There is a picture, if you are not familiar with this item.

Cheater, as a serious motor builder myself and a manufacture of specialized products. I have found a Pin vise to be a great tool to have on hand when building. In fact I found and like a Pinvise so much I started to distribute them.

The model I have is an anodized blue aluminum with 12 assorted drill bits in the handle, all this for under 20 bucks. Unfortunately Paul has not yet updated the Pitstop area of his web site for new and exciting slot car products so I do not have one I can show you a picture of, but let me work on that.

If you are going to the NATS, I should have some on hand if my order ever get filled.

Larry, alas, I will not be attending the Div I Nats; I blew most of my vacation time attending the Div II Nats . . .

I fully agree with you about the usefulness of a pin vise in motor and slot car building. The Vargus one I posted about is one of the larger ones I have seen. The body is something like 1 to 1-1/8 inches in diameter and it really fits my hand well. Vargus sells the handle portion as part of a number of other products used in the machine shop business, such as a line of deburring tools.

For $12.99 it's a very good buy. The one I have I bought from Ray Gardner at the original Bullet Raceway about 12 years ago for over $25!!

If you could, email a pic of yours to me at slotguy@mindspring.com, but don't go to a lot of trouble to do so, as I am unlikely to order one. I'm too happy with the Vargus!
