i just picked up a splendid challenger arm and was wondering what the hot set up would be for it? it's a mura so's it will only fit in a mura or old style rjr. what kind of magnets do these arms like ?and should the air gap be open or shimmed tight. and lastly, what gearing would you recommend (64p) for shorter mostly flat tracks?

any help is really appriciated.

Rich, what exactly makes this arm "splendid"?

Just wondering!

I used to use Mura challengers years ago on a low power, engleman style track. The setups that worked best for me were Mura cans with very strong magnets gapped really tight.

If I were going to build one today, I think I'd use a Kelly can, Proslot endbell, and Proslot Mega matched bluedots epoxied into the can with around a .005 gap. For that old Engleman, I'd run 10/37 gears.

hi dan, long time ,no hear!

what makes this a "splendid" arm? well, this one came from downtowns' personal stash, and was hand picked by mura, has perfect wraps and spec'd out really high. pick of the litter so to speak.

Thanks guys, yea, I haven't thought about slots much lately, but I did make it down to the Nats for a day! Just partied with Weed and The Hurricane a little and watched a bit of the racing but it got the juices flowing, time to blow the cobwebs off my box again!

Richard, sounds like that arm might be really sweet! If it was mine, I'd build an all Mura setup for it, sticking it in a foreign can might be bad voodoo!!!
Anyway, it's always fun to blow people away with stuff that isn't popular.I bet I could build a Mura motor that would beat everyone else's Proslots, and that would make winning even sweeter! :p

PS. --- Rich, are you sure that arm wont fit in a Kelly or Proslot can? Why? Too long? If so, where is the additional length? If it's at the back of the arm, it can be removed. If the length comes from the com being far from the stack, then you're right, Mura and older RJR's are your only choices.

(Go with the Mura can and acid dip it!!!!!:D )

yeah dan, it's too long up at the com end. and would you use nitric, or hydrochloric acid for that "bath";)
you know , from the sound of it you are working MUCH too hard! listen, get on the web and find yourself some interns from the culinary schools. they are VERY cheap(if not free) and make excellent galley slaves:p
