    If the purpose of the diode is to protect the transistor against reverse bias you should put it in. The dioede should be connected with the ring to the emitter and the other end to the colector.

    One more question. I built the ABslotport. Controller wiring using a PNP bi-polar transistor. Should i also put a diode on the transistor? If so what rating and on what. E , B and Collector points Thanks JJ
