A big thanks to our visiting racers - Greg Gilbert from SoCal, George Russell & Ron Southern from NorCal, and Lou Pirro all the way from New York! We think of Mike "Jedi" Stahl and Kevin Searl as regulars here, but they commute every month to our races - Mike from Oregon, and Kevin (and his wife) from Eastern Washington. We always appreciate their efforts in making the races, and enjoy racing with them. Another returning racer was Bob Everett! He's still known as a wing car racer by many - but around here we know what an awesome scale car driver Bob is, and it's great to have him back racing with us.

It was also great to have so many of the Speedshop regular racers step up to the plate and make this the competitive race that it always is!

That was some fast competive racing! Wow, the competition at Slugfest/AFTW is tougher than any other scale race.

    Blown Away

    Thanks James,

I still can't get over how many incredibly fast cars and great drivers were waiting for me up there. If that wasn't enough they bring in guys like George Russell and Lou Pirro to make it even tougher.

Mike Stahl, top Oregon racer who came soooooo close to being USRA Champ in 04, Bob Everett, making another rare but scary appearance as an occasional flat tracker, Jim Naughton, cool and consistant in winning GP10, Peter Verdo, master set up man and tinkerer as well as former Rosecrans racer, Ray Bishop, constant threat, Kevin Kosir, due for a big win, TQ in Cobaly 12 at the 06 nats, Alicia Gilbert, 06 third place at Franks in 1/24 Euro, "Evil Bill" Clemens, probably the toughest competitor I have ever faced. This guy is relentless, ruthless and drives red like it's a center lane.

Big congrats to all the winners. Kevin and Ray, you guys were awesome. It was great to see you guys take your big wins. Very deserving.

    Talking 24 Euro winner

Congrats Kevin on your Euro win!

Your cars have been looking too good lately not to be in the winner circle.

These big races are a blast ............ but a full week of prepping cars and tuning has me wrung out a bit.

It was fun to have the out of town racers show up. And George Russell came in and stole away one of our track records! I want his 10 motor.

Paul, thanks for the quicker ever posting time on the AFTW. Great Job and
Thanks everyone for the kind words. To say the least the competition was better than ever. I have to give a huge shout out to Craig Rieland, for the awesome braid work
And body removal from the 80 pitch. You’re a Pro!! Raymond Batchelor for putting
The patch panel “ tape” on my Euro. I couldn’t of won it with out you two guys.
And then we get to Mr.Lee Gilbert, what a killer 1/24 Eurosport, what can I say
The car and motor package has been kick butt all season long. Thank you.

These other two guys are my amigos, Mike Stahl, Mr. I can do it without sleep.
Your as hardcore as it gets. Peter Verdo, I don’t know were you get it, but
I want some. Thanks for the 1/32nd rides.

To all these gentleman mentioned above, THANK YOU!!!!
For all the other racers that I haven’t mentioned thank you too.
Greg Gilbert, I’m still not gunna let you by me………lol

And for those of you that missed the feast that my bride cooked up for
Us all at 11pm, there’s always next year to make the bash. All you
Outa towners, Lou, Greg, George and Ron I hope to see you next year
    Or maybe in April?

The Track, The Man, The Talent

I’ve had a week to decompress from last weekend’s activities and to ponder the results. Question: what do you get when you mix three ingredients, 1) 140’ Ogilvie MTT, 2) Lee Gilbert, and 3) local talent? What you get is a race with true home-grown world class competitors, absolutely awesome racing, and the attraction of out of town talent like Greg Gilbert, Lou Pirro and Ron Southern. It all took place in a mangy little shopping center with some guys living out of a pick up truck just across from the store. Who woulda thunk? Who knows what kind of animal those fried things were at the Chinese restaurant on Sunday night after the eurosport race? These and many other questions come to mind. The mixture of the abovementioned three main ingredients is something to think about. This MTT is a true masterpiece of slot car race tracks. This track must take hours, if not years to truly understand. Those of us unfamiliar to it’s intricacies can only marvel at the intuitive intelligence of the track designer. How can one track provide eight totally different experiences across a seemingly innocuous expanse of medium density fibreboard? Truly amazing. The man, Lee Gilbert, a slot car monument devotes his life to the design and manufacture of cutting edge slot car technology. Here is a man who doesn’t just pull some parts out of bags and assemble slot cars. He designs and builds prototypes that get tested for hours on the Ogilvie 140’ MTT race course. His knowledge of the interaction between the various components shows the ability for analysis without bias. If it works well, it is sold to customers. If it doesn’t work, well, we don’t know about it because he went back to the work bench and tried again until it worked. For those who do not understand this process, your unfounded criticism of this complex equipment exhibits your complete miscomprehension of the profound electro-mechanical principles thereby mechanized. This takes us to the human beings who frequent the Speedshop establishment. Many have been customers of Lee Gilbert for several years and have thus absorbed a percentage of his knowledge, and have applied their considerable talents to the application of the equipment to the MTT road course. I cannot emphasize the considerable talent of these local racers. You can be sure that I will be back for another round in the unfolding legacy of the American Flat Track Worlds in the year 2008 at a new venue. Thanks for having me.

    Fun, Fun, Fun.....!

Like most of you, I'm sure, it has taken me a while to realize what FUN that weekend of racing was. From the free track time(quite a contrast for us "Southerners") from the beginning, to the "That wasn't chicken" fortune cookie at the resturant at the end, it was FUN, FUN, FUN!!!
    Some notes;
What a FUN bunch of guys and gal, as i recall Alicia kicking my behind in 32nd euro, GT12, and 24th euro...She was havin' FUN.......
Kevin- thanks for the tour of Morrison to see the amazing 1-1 scale chassis FUN/work that you do when you're not kickin' all our butts in 24th euro, and George and I will rest less and Lemon Drop more next year because they are probably Yellow, and I'm sure to be fond of them.
Craig- I hope you don't get arrested searching Macy's changing room floors on hands and knees looking for rear view mirrors and shift knobs.
George really had FUN inking his lap record in grp.10, and really had FUN winning 32nd F1.
I really had FUN in those concours, had more FUN racing on a challenging track(I many never get the do-nut right-TRACK! not UNDER!)
We both had FUN when his Toyota hybrid got 40+ MPG all week.
Many thanks, again, to Lee and the entire Speedshop gang and I will see you all again next year for more FUN, or even better for some FUN at the Summer Run-offs, PCSC, or the '08 Nats at SCR.

    Jedi power

Zippity, the Jedi was in all out thrash mode during the Flats. He pulled an
all nighter building a IRL chassis. I figure he was up for about 42 hours straight! Jedi also ran my backup 1/24th Eurosport and qualified 2nd. I can't
thank him enough for helping me thrash on Cody's stuff too. Yeah he talks funny too.
