George you should have rebuilt your motor on the spot.
I had my 1/32 motor go bad the first few laps of qualifying due to an odd substance on the motor brushes which hardened. I went back, took apart the motor. hacked out the exploded motor brush with a diamond faced hood alignment bar then rebuilt the motor using a precut brush, cleaned, flushed, broke in for a minute and continued racing.
Simple...Ahh having the right tools do a slotcar wonders....
Even good practice as oddly the exact same thing happened to my 1/24th euro during qualifying.

power came on, car ran a few laps then stopped. The can bearing failed, the arm took out the magnets. I suppose I coulda switched motors from my other car, but it was too much. Besides, as I left the building I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to say, "gotta go, lost my balls".The extra sleep helped!
