Curious, Some nick names need no explnation as to meaning

Why do they call Paul MoM ?
(cuz he is just like your MoM ,nice sometimes ,but not afraid to wack an unruly child)
Mantaray, is that a self given handel or did someone else call you that?
Lots of others here, how long have you used your Nickname?

How did you get your nickname?

I'm not sure who started it... but a short time after starting this forum, somebody called me "mom", because I was always having to come and "clean up" after all the messes started by the "kids".

I think after one big "clean up" - somebody posted "thanks mom"... and it stuck.

Seems like something "Bent Rim" might have started... but I'm not sure... (bet you don't wonder how he got HIS nickname!)

It could also have been "weedracer" (no real mystery there...)

I remember when my son & I went to the Nats at Beuf's in Boise in 1999... when we walked in the door, about 50 people all yelled "HI MOM!"

My son Kris (aka "OWH Jr") was a bit dumbfounded... not just by them calling me "mom" - but the fact that all these people - slot car racers from all over the world... actually KNEW me!

When he asked how they all knew me - I replied "what did you think I've been doing all the time on the computer?"

I guess he just assumed I was doing what everyone else does on the computer.... video games & porn...

Some people still think my name is actually "Harold"... I guess I've been publishing "The Old Weird Herald" so long that I've BECOME "Harold".

You didn't say how you came up with "mccr3328"

RAMCAT....I sometimes lay claim to inventing "nerfing" ..and I AM quite skilled at it.....inside, outside, six lanes away. Started doing it at the Rail-racing track at Richard's Hobby in Aurora, IL in 1958. I CAN be hard to pass, but I truly do not do it intentionally....

I also like and keep cats, and I am an Aries...therefore a RAM - CAT.

Well I don't have a nick name as such.

However my good friend and racing mate, Anthony Przybylowicz, was given his nick name of TonyP when computers first entered into slot car racing.

The data entry field would not accept Anthony Przybylowicz, but TonyP fit. So, now you know the rest of the story.

Marty, Tony was known as TonyP in the early 70's before the computer age. It wasn't because we didn't know his last name, it was because we didn't know how to pronounce it or spell it.

Slapshot vs slapshot are pucks made of rubber or sticks made of wood?

I am going to digress here since not all handles are handle but lifelong nicknames.

FYI my handle story is acctually an Nickname that came about when I was 10 years old. It predates the Movie Slapshot with actor Paul Newman who was a astonishing race car driver as well.

I was in Billy Harris Summer Hockey school in Toronto Canada. Yes they have that in Canada. It was a month long school where we learned hockey skills as kids, and I was a late starter and my Dad entered me in the school because the teachers were three famous Hockey Hall of fame players, Billy Harris a long time Torono Maple Leafs player, and two of my idol players Dave Keon, and Goilie Johnny Bauer.

I was on practice plays headed by Dave Keon, and I guess I was trying to show off my stuff to the super star. Back then was the beginning of the radically curved stick and with it came the quickly rising slap shot as a result. We went in for two plays and when I got the puck the first time I let loose a slapshot which hit the cross pipe with a loud "clank". That sound was followed quickly by "oooohs and Ahhhs" of my fellow practicers.

Dave Keon says shoot lower nextime by shooting the puck next to you instead of ahead a few inches. So next play few minutes later I set up the play again. I let loose a ripper and it rose quickly an hit the Goalie in the left glove sholder near the arm pit and knocked him backwards into the net with pain, (he was a short stocky goalie that was only as tall as the goal).

Later when we were removing the equipment my friend goes "see what you did to me!" On his chest he points to what was a gopher hole size black an blue bruise. Dave Keon was there and commented "way to go Slapshot now nextime bruise the inside of the net not the goalie."

That nickname stuck thoughout my youth hockey playing period. When I started on the web forums I thought of that nickname becuase Paul Newman was a racer, and the three Hanson brothers in the movie "brought thier fricken toys" and raced slotcars in thier room between games. Naturally....Slapshot.....
