Advice from an Old Weird Slot Car Racer

Advice from an Old Weird Slot Car Racer

    by Paul Kassens

Here’s a pic of me when I still had hair… thrashing for a 9 hour Enduro race in 1982. – Old Weird Herald

I don’t claim to be any sort of expert or top racer, but in my 50+ years of racing slot cars, I have learned a lot. While I actually have won a few “major” type races in my time, as well as plenty of local and regional type races over the years… I have probably learned most of my lessons the hard way – in the races I have lost. And I’ve lost plenty.

"If it’s true that you learn from your mistakes… then I oughta be a damned genius by now!” – Paul Kassens
I suspect that this may also be the case with a lot of the top pro racers as well, even if they might not like to dwell on that fact.

I’m sure multiple time National and World Champion Paul “Beuf” Pedersen has even learned a few lessons from races he actually lost… that is… IF he can remember back that far… LOL

So… I have been jotting down some of these little slot car pieces of wisdom, tidbits and tips, practical pointers, and peppered with some random thoughts, opinions, advice, and common sense… based on my experiences, both good and bad… of enjoying, racing, and competing in this fun but competitive hobby and sport of slot car racing.

    BEEEEEP… beep… boop… Race ‘em!

Paul, that's a real nice writeup!
I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people who annoy me.

We are currently staging the NZ 1/24 Nationals this weekend here in Wellington.

I am convinced that your article should be compulsive viewing to all attendees

That would have been a much better title!

I would hope that they'll be a bit too busy racing to have time to read it... but it's a nice thought!

Nice to see that Kiwi in your pic has had time to hoist a local brew, however! I'll bet he's having a great time!

When I added the bit about messy pits not necessarily being a bad thing... and that "I have seen many top racers with messy pits…", Chris R & Doug Bauer both came to mind.

I have pics of Chris R's pit at the Portland Div 2 Nats that would win most messy pit awards... yet it doesn't seem to slow him down much!

But then when I got to the one about an organized pit... there were several that could fit the bill, but Aussie Wayne Bramble has to be at the top of that list.

I remember at the 2001 Port Jeff Nats when a small crowd gathered around Wayne's pit, to marvel at how organized it was. It quickly degraded into making jokes, and I believe I got a pic of Doug Bauer sitting in Wayne's pit, that might have given Wayne a heart attack if he had been there.

Yup... a lot of stuff & info I've been accumulating over the years... and I still keep thinking of more... much of it is common sense, but hopefully can be helpful to those who have not suffered through losing as many races as some of us old farts.

Maybe I'll keep jotting down stuff as I think of it, and have enough for a "part 2" eventually... or rehash it to fit that "Zen and the Art of Slot Car Racing" title Tim suggested!

    Excellent collection...

If you're willing to accept input, maybe guys can PM you with their lessons learned, you can edit for style, etc, and you can post it as a sticky...

Thanks for all you do and have done...

    Thanks Bill!

I had originally planned on just posting a handful of tips on a thread here, and then asking people to add on posts with more tips. But once I started gathering & writing, I got kinda carried away and wound up posting it as an article.

But it would still be great to have others share more tips, tricks, and words of wisdom here in this thread! No real need for PM's - they can just be posted here, and I could copy them and put them together (with contributor credits of course, and editing if needed) in another article all in one place once we've collected a bunch!

Here's one I just thought of:

For learning hot tips on how you can start beating the local hotshots (in case they don't share all their secrets), be sure to read OWH Slot Car Talk - where many "seasoned" old farts like me from all over the world share all sorts of slot car tips & tricks every day!
    Sound good for starters???

    Now your turn...

Great article. the best advice for all racers (When turn marshaling, remember the “Golden Rule”. Turn marshal for them as you would like them to turn marshal for you.) This more then anything else will make for a great race and fun experience for all.

Just bumping this thread - so that anyone who might have missed it before has another chance to take a gander.

Also... anyone else have any other pearls of wisdom that I might have missed???

If so.... post them here! C'mon gang - don't be shy (or lazy...)
