BUCKEYE RETRO SERIES (BRS) … RT. 93 … Race #5

CAP HENRY SWEEPS RT. 93 BRS NORTH RACE

‘Oh, the weather outside is frightful’…

Despite a major pre-winter snow storm that was raging in Eastern Ohio, 38-racers made their way to Route 93 Raceway in Akron, OH on Sat. Dec. 14 to participate in the Buckeye Retro Series (BRS) North race, which represented the half-way point of the inaugural BRS 10-event season schedule. The race also served as the second leg of the new American Raceway Series, which includes races at Thazer Raceway in South Bend, IN and Fastraxxx Raceway in Fremont, OH.

After everything was said and done, Cap Henry was as hot ‘inside’ on the original 1960s-era 155 foot American Blue King track, as the frigid temperatures were ‘outside’ in the ‘Rubber City’. Henry, who hails from Bellevue, OH, and excels racing anything with four wheels, swept both the Formula One/Indy and Can-Am IRRA LLC retro classes in a record smashing day that elevated the Rt. 93 circuit to the title of the ‘Fastest Original American Blue King track in the nation’. New one-lap and total-lap records in both classes were established during the race program.

Henry was second quick with a 4.809 lap, edging Ralph Thorne (4.813), Ron Smith (4.845), Rick Bennardo Jr. (4.846), and Jay Kisling (4.885). In all, 15-drivers qualified under the 5.0 time mark.

FORMULA ONE/INDY MAINS

D-MAIN

The D-Main essentially turned into a four man race from the outset, with Rick Bennardo Sr, Dave Mountz and Larry Mattingly setting the early pace, with all three drivers turning in 32-lap performances in the first heat. Indiana racer Dennis Clark joined the hunt coming off of his first heat sit out, and quickly became involved in the battle for podium honors. As the race progressed Bennardo and Mountz began pulling away, while Mattingly and Clark had their own race for the third spot. In the end Bennardo and Mountz both ended up with 257laps, with the victory going to Bennardo on track position. Mattingly and Clark were in a dead heat going into the final segment, but Mattingly managed to finish third by a lap. Dan ‘Pops’ Myers had a great run to finish fifth, followed by: Dave Geerhing, Brian Russo, Rick Easterday and Matt Easterday,

B-MAIN

The nine-man round robin B-Main turned into an instant classic as Brad Feurstein managed to nip Steve Koepp for the win by a lap when the power went off after the final heat. Feurstein and Greg Fox were tied going into the final segment, with Koepp and Larry Kinsey just two laps in back of the leaders. Feurstein finished strong on the purple lane with a 34-lap effort to preserve his victory, while both Koepp and Kinsey managed to leap frog Fox, who had to finish on a difficult black gutter. Kinsey, Fox, Scott Lemon and Mark Kitto all finished with 266-laps, with track position determining the final finishing order. Brian McPherson was one lap further back in the seventh position, in front of Bud Bartos and Dave Gardiner. Only four laps separated the top seven cars at the finish. Kitto may have been the biggest story of the race. After being credited with only 25-laps due to a gear problem in his first heat, the owner of MMW Raceway in Canton, OH marched through the field during the remaining heats to be in contention at the end.

Dave Geehring outlasted Dan Forbush by track position for fourth. Mark Gardiner had a solid run of 270 laps to secure the third spot, finishing in front of a gaggle of drivers nipping at his heels. ROUTE .93 ROUNDUP …

With his double victory at Rt. 93 Cap Henry became the first repeat winner in the BRS series, as he also won at his home track, HMS Hobbies, earlier in the season… It is interesting to note that the same driver has won both the Formula One/Indy and Can-Am features in every BRS event staged thus far. Ron Hershman at The SUMMIT (Rt. 93), Willy Custer (REM), Dave Gardiner ( MMW) and Henry ( HMS and Rt. 93)… Henry is an amazing study. He wins in virtually anything that has wheels. Slot cars and RC racing are his winter-time pursuits. During the summer months he is one of the top ranked sprint car drivers on the All Star Circuit of Champions, and placed in the top-10 at the prestigious Knoxville (IA) Nationals promoted by the World of Outlaws. Henry is also very competitive in outlaw go kart racing throughout Ohio. His latest venture will be indoor micro sprint racing the weekend after Christmas at ‘The Rumble’ in Ft. Wayne, IN… Henry is not the only racer in BRS that doubles in slot cars and 1:1 race cars. Dave Gardiner recently retired from driving short-track asphalt late models after six decades, while son, Mark, is active on the Eastern Ohio dirt late model circuit … Ross Scharf indicates he has secured a building in Barberton, OH for his new Highbank Raceway, and plans to work toward a spring opening … Rick and Matt Easterday are also exploring the possibility of opening a new raceway in the Mansfield-Ashland, OH area… Justin Porter, who along with his father recently added a four-lane Hill Climb for 1/32 cars, along with a scale quarter-mile drag strip at their HotWheelsHaven shop in the Cleveland area, joined BRS for the Rt. 93 event. Justin said future plans are to add an eight lane road course, suitable for retro racing, to their present track line-up … Scott Lemon and Al Rutti turned exact qualifying times of 4. 8396654 during Can-Am time trials forcing officials to resort to their second best timed lap to break the tie. Lemon took the honors with a run of 4.910 to Rutti’s 4.953 … Brian Russo came from Eastern Pa to join the action, and tips that he may soon be moving to the Pittsburgh area, and becoming a BRS regular … Hats off to track owner Debbie Baldwin-Elavsky and track manager Steve Reed for again providing their renowned hospitality throughout the weekend. And, what can we say about the food! Debbie provided breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, along with eight different desserts. There was even free pizza on Friday for those arriving early for practice. No one leaves Rt. 93 hungry … Ron Hershman arrived a day early and took over track preparation for the race. The result were new track records across the board in both classes… Due to weather conditions the announced Retro-Flexi race was cancelled.

NEXT RACE: BRS NORTH … Race #6
