St. Maarten’s Delemore third at International Championship

PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten model car racer Frank Delemore took third place as St. Maarten Speedway hosts thirty of the world's best racers for a week of high speed International Championship Competition.

Racers from Czech Republic, Germany, Canada and the United States started arriving as early as June 6, to prepare for the championships that conclude Sunday.

Delemore, at age 60 plus, grabbed a spot on the International podium in the Group 12 Division. Speedway owner and a three-time world champion Reggie Coram broke an axle in his group 27 light competition and finished sixth.

"Thus far Germany is dominating the track," admitted Coram who first brought model car racing to St. Maarten in 1991, and the following year hosted the World Championship on the Friendly Island.

Coram had dreamed of bringing back the world event to the island, but had a major setback in 2010 when a tree blew over in a storm damaging the Speedway's roof on the Great Bay Promenade pouring water over the 155-foot-long track and ruining it.

With help from sponsors SXM Airport, Napa, Budget Marine, CaribServe and Pineapple Pete, Coram has been able to replace the track.

"The guys love the track and the island," boasts Coram. "There is already talk of making St. Maarten an annual event and even holding the World Championships here."

Today the racers have a day off to enjoy the island. There is a planned catamaran trip, shopping and sightseeing.

Racing resumes Saturday and finishes Sunday. Warm-up begins at 4:30pm and racing starts at 5:00pm both days.
