Oh Wow! That is a heck of a corner! In every project the builder is presented with opportunities to define himself...

Chris, I'm absolutely certain that that corner is supposed to be exactly like that. The one right after the tunnel is just as bad.

I thought that was the turn just on the other side of the tunnel in the first picture that shows the group cleaning the track. (Red on the inside, decreasing radius into a strait, looks like a shadow of the bridge on the lower left.) Where's the other tough turn you're thinking of? That switchback to the right of the bridge in the same photo? The angle of the photo makes it hard for me to see exactly what's going on up there.

I didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with the track in either design or execution, just that I don't build decreasing radii turns that way. Although I have my preferences I'll happily race on whatever someone has gone to the effort to keep for us to race on.

I prefer to cut a slot path that transitions into and out of the turns more gradually, a slot car should follow a line more like the line a 1:1 racer would follow in that turn. But I recognize that that's just MY "should". :-) It's obvious from this great collection of photos that Paul has pulled together for us that everybody's having a good time. I wish I could have made the trip to Europe to see the race in person!

Here's how it works with the track. I'm making the turn names up:

Long typical main straight, except that the lap counter is exactly where you'd blip for the bank. This means that if need an extra tenth in qualifying, you can just slam into the wall instead of blipping for bank. About 1/3 of the F1 qualifiers this. Funny place for the lap counter, I think. May have been intentional.

Typical bank, about 270 degrees, totally flat, short blip I think even for the fast guys with the big euros on red and white.

Short straight, one of the biggest differentiators. The fast guys fly through this into the esses, everybody else goes through at maybe 3/4s.

Large diameter esses, not the usual huge differentiator in the beginning, but the last ess is a long sweeper downhill leading to the short downhill straight under the bridge. Just like in Malmo, it's crucial to fly through the top of the esses into that last sweeper, and then neither accelerate nor back off, as the cars unload on the last part of the ess and for much of the downhill, otherwise they get really squirrelly. The idea is to have the car enter that last ess and continue on the straight at pretty much exactly the speed that you want for the tight 90 degree left right after the bridge. Sounds not so bad, but the bridge crosses the tunnel at a 45 degree angle, so that you don't see the cars until they're already well into the corner. Also, the higher the speed, the more downforce (except in Production and F1), so you're really rewarded for going fast. If you miss it's an off where no one coming has a prayer of stopping for you, because they can't see their cars. If you really miss or rider, you get a wall shot. Very difficult, but happily we saw it before in Malmo, so mostly we do OK there.

After the "tunnel 90", you're in the L-part of the track. The kink in the picture Chris was commenting on is a right just before the second "bank", which is a totally flat perhaps 300 degree turn, slightly smaller diameter than the one at the end of the main straight. Obviously, the kink is a differentiator, except for the big euros which go through stuff like this amazingly fast. The 300 is a differentiator, too, as you need to be flying, so that you're fast on the 10 foot straight that ends on the lead-on.

The lead-on is typical, and not as hard on black as it looks. Red is a different story: You need to do this fast so that you get through the lead-on fast, but if you miss, the cars often helicopter and land, diabolically, at the beginning of the tight 90 under the bridge, where the drivers underneath already can't see where their cars are.

So that's it. Not the hardest track for me I've been on (which was Malmo), but close.

    Hope this helps!

    Greg
