HERSHMAN & CUSTER WIN RETRO ROC RACES. MERRIMAN WINS WSC. TRACK RECORDS SHATTERED IN ALL CLASSES AS HERSHMAN GRABS HIS FIRST ROC RING
The fourth annual Race of Champions, the "Race for the Ring" was held July 17-18, 2015 at Real Speed Raceway in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Racers from Georgia, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana traveled in for this yearly event. This was the 5th race of the RETRO National Championship Series.
A total of 22 racers made for a total of 60 entries racing in the three classes over the weekend. Willy Custer the 2014 ROC Champ was on hand to defend his Championship as well as Top racers from the area and afar.
Friday night a WSC-FK Coupe race was held for everyone to race and warm up a bit on the Real Speed Ogilvie built King track. There were 20 entries for this non ring event. Concours Winner Bob Foster
Qualifying...... with a few drivers turning some 4.4 laps in practice, the question was how many could do this qualifying and how fast would the WSC-FK cars really go? With the Can Am FK record being 4.4 something, could WSC's go as fast or faster. Chris Barnes was the first to break in to the 4.4's followed by Troy Johnson who went a tick faster, then Greg Fox went a bit faster and then James Merriman went the fastest with a 4.427 leaving Ron Hershman last up to try and go faster. Ron could only go 4.429 leaving James Merriman the TQ and New Track Record Holder with his 4.427 lap.
WSC-FK B Main..... Lonnie Baatz was the early leader and led until his sit out handing the lead to Rich Attee who led until his sit out. Then came the flying three of Ross Scharf, JP Milcherska and Bob Foster cycling through sit outs. In the end and a very close and exciting finish was Ross Scharf Winning with 285.18 laps over JP Milcherska 285.02 and Bob Foster 285.01. Wow what a finish. 4th was Austin Milcherska 281, Lonnie Baatz 279.20, Rich Attee 279.12, Dennis Clark 279.08, Dave Geehring 272, Zach Woods 247 and Kaytlin Johnson 247. Fastest Race Lap Ross Scharf 4.747.
WSC-FK A Main...... Willy Custer and Ron Hershman tie for the lead after heat 1. Ron takes the lead in heat 2 and sits out. Greg Fox leads until his sit out and Troy Johnson takes the lead for a heat until his sit out. James Merriman took the lead after 9 heats and went on to win with 305 laps with Ron Hershman 4 back in 2nd 301 and one ahead of Greg Fox's 300. 4th was Troy Johnson 297 followed Tim Baatz 293.16, Steve Peppler 293.13, Uncle Bob Dempsey 289, Chris Barnes 287 and Dan Myers 287. Fastest Race Lap Greg Fox 4.503

Concours Winner Austin Milcherska
Qualifying....... how fast could the Can Am-FK cars go??? A few low 4.4 in practice.... could they go 4.3? 4.2? Dale Wilson was the first to go in the 4.4's followed by Troy Johnson and Willy Custer. James Merriman was the first and the 4.3's with a 4.384. Greg Fox went a very fast 4.333 and Ron Hershman stepped up last and laid down a 4.307 for TQ honors and set the New Track Qualifying Record. The field of 22 was now set with 7 racers in and C and B mains and the Top 8 qualifiers in the A Main.
Can Am-FK C Main........ Rich Attee was the early leader with Bob Foster and Lonnie Baatz on his back bumper. In the 4th heat, Lonnie grabs the lead and goes on to Win with 290 laps, 2nd Rich Attee 286 and Bob Foster 3rd with 279. Austin Milcherska 4th 274 followed by Dave Geehring 273, Zach Woods 253 and Kaytlin Johnson 246. Fastest Race Lap Lonnie Baatz 4.645

F1-FK Race of Champions
Concours Winner Katylin Johnson
Qualifying........ could the F1-FK cars go in the 4.4's? Several low 4.5 cars in practice, but could anyone break the 4.4's? Bob Foster runs a 4.509 early in qualifying then Troy Johnson runs a 4.498. Willy Custer runs a 4.488 and Ron Hershman runs a 4.466 for TQ and the New Track Qualifying Record.
F1-FK B Main..... 9 man round robin event. A fairly clean race at times and not so clean at other times. A broken guide flag or two and bent chassis or two before it was over. JP Milcherska ran away with this race and hid from the field to win with 290 laps followed by Dennis Clark 285, Austin Milcherska 284 for the South Bend "Sweep" of the B Main. Fourth was Rich Attee 280 followed by Dan Myers 271, Zach Woods 244, Katylin Johnson 200, Chris Barnes 165 and Dave "I've had enough" Geehring 35 laps. Fastest Race Lap JP Milcherska and Rich Attee both ran 4.728 lap times in the race.
F1-FK A Main...... Another 9 man round robin event. Another ugly event for some and not for a few. In the early going it was James and Ron tied for first and then Willy got into the lead by the 5th heat over James and Ron. Willy running good and staying out of trouble as James and Ron fall back a bit. Going in to the final heat Willy leads James by 2 and Ron is way back in third and a couple ahead of Ross. Willy Custer Wins with 303, James Merriman 2nd 301, Ron Hershman 3rd 294, Ross Scharf 290, Lonnie Baatz 282, Bob Dempsey 280, Bob Foster 263, Rick Stagen 207 DNF, Troy Johnson 185 DNF. We missed racing with Moose, but it was great seeing him and knowing he is on the road back to health and it will take some time, but he can't wait to get back to building and racing. See you soon Moose!!!
Special Thanks to Mike, Holly and Zach Holley for hosting the event and doing their very best to make sure we had a great time. The track was the fastest it's ever been and Mike assures that more work will be done on the straight away to make it smoother for F1 cars.
Super Special Thanks to Tim and Lonnie Baatz for opening and closing the raceway and running the counter while Mike was away and with Moose being out.
Look for ROC 2016 info in the future and we look forward to going back to Mid America Raceway in the Chicago area for next years event and race.
