Knight Rider Cutoff Challenge "What is this Question?"

    Hello,

I have very little experience with slot cars, so please excuse my poor poor use of terminology.

The car is the Kitt car from the 1983 Kinght Rider Cutoff Challenge, currently non-working.

I have included a picture, but if some reason it did not show I will do my best to explain:

    The Bottom Line:
There is a black resistor looking thing(maybe slightly smaller than a 1/2") with a silver band, that is open (diode maybe).
This connects (internally) the left contact with the motor. There is a break between the contact and the motor contact with this soldered connecting the 2.
The silver band faces the lower contact, away from the motor contact.
When I short the contacts, the light energizes and the motor runs.

The questions is, What is this and do I need it?

I do not know the official size of the car, but I have read in other forums that it is equivalent to a TCR MK3/MK4.

Thanks so much for just stopping by and reading.
