What would cause 4 spur gears to be stripped in just a few laps

Many things: loose motor, way too much gear lash, 64 pinion with a 72 spur or vice versa, very loose axle bearing or oilite would be the first things to check.

    Hope this helps.

Or a cracked chassis which is more likely to happen in a spring steel chassis

Also check for play in the can bearing and armature shaft.

Gear teeth may not be parallel or at an angle. No matter what pitch gears you use remember that the gear teeth must be parallel to each other. If they aren't the steel pinion will eat away at the plastic spur gear. No matter what combo of gears you use straight spur straight pinion, straight spur angled pinion, angled spur straight pinion or angled spur angled pinion the teeth must be parallel to each other. It also helps very much if the axle and motor armature shaft centerline are on the same plane.
I've done so much with so little for so long it seems like I can do anything with nothing at all.
