OWH's "Almost Live" USRA Div 1 Nats Coverage

I'm here in sunny Southern California at Buena Park Raceway at the 2002 USRA Div 1 national Championships aka "The Nats".

Upon arrival at LAX airport, I was a bit nervous that my reception was a going to be a bit more exciting then anticipated, as there were L.A. Sheriffs, Police, County cops, etc., filling up the baggage area where I had just grabbed my bags. There were also TV crews, so I didn't know whether to be excited or nervous, but somehow logic told me that they weren't there for me...

Apparently there was a plane load of NYPD & FDNY passengers, who had arrived in LA for a golf tournament with the LA Fire & Police departments.

They left in a busload with complete police escort.... just before Philippe showed up to pick me up.... after I told him he could find me by all the police cars - which just left. After a few laps, we eventually flagged each other down while on cell phones.

Off to Buena Park Raceway, where it was already humming with motors breaking in and racers testing on the track, in preparation for the first event of the 2002 Nats - the new Spec Boxstock class.

10 racers signed up for the new class, and would be run in a round robin main event. Entrants included my esteemed taxi service Philippe, who was handed a car to race by Ron Hershman at the last minute, and with only a little arm twisting, Mr. TSRF was in the race - racing winged wonders once again! He actually didn't do that bad, especially considering the surprise last minute entry with little practice, however he did get caught offguard during a heat break, and was talking to Lenore between heats - when the power went on for the next heat without him! Oops!

So... without further ado... here's the results of the first race of the 2002 Nats:

    1 - Joe Chevey - 444
    2 - Ian "Goat Boy" Tomlinson - 432
    3 - Casey Scott - 430
    4 - Lance Gardner - 408
    5 - David Aikens - 407
    6 - Frank Incorvaia - 404
    7 - Richard Garri - 400
    8 - Alan Trujillo - 398
    9 - Philippe De Lespinay - 385
    10 - Lorin Swirsky - 305

    Concours: Lance Gardner

Looks like the spec box race has a pretty good start. It will be fun to see this at the next nats.

Congratulations to Uncle Kal's racer Casey Scott for picking up a podium in his first ever Nats race yesterday in the Spec 15 race.

I know Casey had never even seen a Spec 15 car before yesterday, and has only raced in a few wing car races, who said scael racers don't make good wing car racers.

    Go get em Casey !!

Wink Not even dead last? It's unfair.

Many thanks to Ron Hershman and his gang for loaning me a great car to race when all I wanted to do is to pick up Paul at the airport, then stop by the raceway to set the Champion Vintage Display, and...go back to work!

Ron & Co made me feel like Michael Schumacher with the best service I ever had in a slot car race.
The car was awsome, and driven by someone less old'n slow, it should have easily won. With a bit of practice I could be quite good at this...

Congrats to Joe Cormier for winning. Joe was a mere amateur when I was terrorizing the Pro class 30 years ago, and boy, did he learn something! He dominated the action and controled it the whole way.

I also was impressed by the courtesy and calm of all racers, with no screaming even at the tense moments of this crash festival.

Thanks to the USRA boys/girls for having selected motors that appeared fairly equal.
