Of course they must fall under the "Slot Car Darwinian Theory of Evolution" - those are the ones that don't seem to stay around. Time will always tell you of good raceways - they seem to stay around, mostly in the same spot for many years! quote]

I used to think that way also, but I have seen a raceway be open for 13 plus years that I wouldn't have given 1 year when it first opened. They don't seem to have a huge racer base and lots of people talk poorly of them, but they continue to stay open? They have changed locations quite a few times over the years.

I'm pretty sure it's a matter of space and the sense that a King is needed to be a legitimate destination for racers. I know..... that's not something that is real but it's a feeling that having a King changes your placement. You have those slot shops with a King and those without. Engleman might be a favorite and in my opinion is more of a status symbol than a king.

I think that is because there are so few Engleman out there that it doesn't come to mind whereas there are plenty of Kings and that is what first pops up in your head.

To all you guys that voted dragstrip... LMAO...I would be willing to bet none of you have been in a raceway with 300 entries, waiting in line to make a pass. Drag strips will keep raceways alive. Period. Every drag strip I have been to on friday or saturday nights iare PACKED. Plus you get the by-backs out of the first round losers. All the different classes. If anything it is TOO busy. Racing until 3 or 4 in the morning.

If you own a raceway without a dragstrip, you are missing out like crazy.

Damn this is and old poll//

I hate to admit it but you're right. I have a dragstrip and it will be given a prominent place when I reopen, hopefully very soon. It does change the atmosphere of the slot car business but.... it will help keep the doors open.

I don't like racing on ovals. If they're too small going in circles makes me puke. I have raced on them but not my favorite.
I've done so much with so little for so long it seems like I can do anything with nothing at all.

I had a tri oval and it was ok but I don't see the long term allurement of an oval. As a secondary track just to break up the races.....sure. But as a primary or solo track, I have trouble with that concept. I know there are some out there doing well but I struggle to go with that sort of set up.

i raced 10 yrs on a 85' trioval. You have to use a different mind set, than when road racing, to successfully race on ovals & triovals.
I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people who annoy me.

There's a place for the tri oval and oval....wouldn't argue there's not. I guess I just don't know if circle racing would hold my attention or present me with enough of a variety of challenge in the long run. I know there are some great guys racing great races on them. And I'll add one to the raceway again one day. I just won't put that at the center of my program. It will be the additional track in my case.

I wondered the same thing. I am buying an Engleman now so I'm relieved to see that because the choice was King or Engleman. I believe a King track is like a right of passage or just the standard track for Slot Car racing. I personally don't like ovals. Boring races in my view. I love the road courses. So I am completely upside down from the tracks built but in line with driver preferences I believe.

There are many tracks with those squiggles. It makes it a driving track instead of a flat out speed run. Why don't you like them?

As of today, October 19, 2020 the least popular are Drag, the Oval, and then the King. Which is spectacularly odd because those are the three tracks most likely to be considered for a track opening. I think the lack of votes for a drag is owing to this being a forum with little drag representation. So we can mark that off as bias in the polling.

The oval was a surprise but it was number two. For many an oval represents real racing. NASCAR and DLM running in circles is what they imagine "real" racing to be. But for those not enthralled with trying to replicate the world of full size racing, it's just a boring track going round and round.

The figure 8 grabbed the third least liked track. I suppose I'm not shocked at that.

The King was an initial surprise but on reflection, I've heard more people say they don't like a King than I have heard say they do. For the wing car advocates that's blasphemy. But it seems you either love or you hate a King.

The last to mention is going from the King to the Hill Climb. But the negative votes weren't really overwhelming. Something had to come in 4th. The top four spots really soaked up the most negative votes. Ironically, if I expand I'm going to put a King in anyway.

Well it's been awhile now since I reopened....drag track is up and tested and level and smooth as a baby butt....but I can't seem to get any drag interest. I have no idea why. Some drag guys talk about it but just no one is turning out for the Drag racing.

I was in the process of building a raceway. I can tell you, right now is not the time. People are not going to spend money for the next three years on anything but necessities. So, I am on hold. Once you get a core group of guys, the rest will come. Just not sure this in the right time to expect racers.
