that is the problem with me traveling to races, I always leave just what I need at home! But since Nats are going to be at the closest track to my home track, my son and I will be there. Been to a flat track worlds there when Rob was still around and the guys at Pacific haven't disappointed with any aspect of putting on a race with his passing, RIP Rob. that said we are going to make Flats this year as a test and tune for '14 nats. Congrats Jim and crew. See ya in July

    Mike,
its hard to say whether or not a gear guard would have saved me, my finger definitely could have though! The truth of 80 pitch gears is if you look at them funny it can have a lasting impact on their longevity. That being said I wouldn't presume it would hinder performance with the extra weight but I am not aware of anyone who has tried.

Somebody needs to start producing metal spur gears again.
I don`t even trust plastic gears in 64 pitch.

Congrats to Matt Bruce and all the other guys who ran good at the Nats.

Going into the last heat of the 1/24 Eurosport race I had a three lap lead over Greg Gilbert. Greg was on the purple lane and I went to black.

For those unfamiliar with the Jersey Devil, the black lane is for sure the hardest and slowest lane. "Try to keep your loss to two laps if you can" is what I heard the whole time I was there. My main worry was how little tires I had remaining. My pit crew, Jason Hooper and Hermanator told me I "probably had one more heat left" in the tires. Oh boy. I had only three laps in the bank and a World Champion trying to run me down on the gutter lane. Longest five minutes of my life. Well, maybe there's been others.

Needless to say, I did my best to time it so I drove steadily, drove just fast enough, and prayed the tires would have enough rubber. This was the result, my car the silver/orange, Greg's the white/green. It's racing with folks like Greg Gilbert that makes this sport so rewarding for me, and this result could have very easily been reversed.

The Main was a fantastic race with the top racers, but in the end it was the local talent that came through, and it couldn't have gone to a better person than Matt Bruce, somebody whom I have always respected as a world class racer, and as a world class sportsman. Need more like him! Congrats Matt.

    George,
The only part of the story(or picture) that doesn't make sense is your car is on Purple, with what appears to be a Purple sticker,
and Greg's is on Yellow, again with what appears to be a Yellow sticker.

Mike, you put that very gently! I'm running on about 9 hours sleep over the past two days, you know how that is. Yeah, when I wrote that story this morning, I couldn't figure out where Tracy Chin fit into the picture. I could have sworn he finished on black but graciously pulled out to aid me (spotting) in the last heat. I had my mind set on black being my own last lane!!! You're right, I was on purple. Tracy was so great during that whole race. PG had a massive accident around halfway through the Main, so he was a gazillion laps behind. I was the only hope for a Norcal win and Tracy was there for me as he always has been. Not only did he pull his car to give me an empty lane, but he helped me with spotting during the heat....nothing extensive, just letting me know how much time there was and some nice encouragement. Sure is nice when you aren't out there totally by yourself! That also explains why Greg was coming like the Freight Train From Hell, the yellow lane is considerably faster than the two inside lanes. Thanks for the correction Mike. I'm back from grocery shopping now and feel like keeling over!!!!

    George,
    Don't worry.

You definitely qualify for "too burnt out to think straight" dispensation, especially with you being an USRA official. LOL

Congrats to one of my fellow R-Geo Retro Teammates, Matt Bruce on his HUGE win, and one of the best slotcar win celebrations ever! (He literally raised the roof in the raceway)

Matt ran the motor that Casey and I were saving for the A main, a Camen small block setup with Valiko arm and Camen Single (yes, single mags for all those single mag naysayers out there) Mags built by Camen, and assembled, tuned and tested by Casey.

The grin on Matts face when he came back from a few practice laps with that motor in the track time before the A main said it all. I knew then that he would be a factor in the A main.

    Great job Matt!
If I'm racing it it probably came from or was built by:

Yes, it's my slotcar site, and I know it needs updating. 1 Lap Short

    Mike,

I use rearguards on Euros, mainly because I'm slow and get hit in the rear a lot. I strongly doubt that they slow the car down. Actually, I need one for my new 2 new chassis. Do you have any?

    Greg,
    To quote the great 70's philosopher, Harry Callahan;
"A Man's Got to Know his Limitations ".

    Yes, I still have them.

    $6.95 retail.

They weigh exactly 1 gram, but I'm pretty sure you could reduce that by 25%, or so, and still be "real protective".

For those not familiar with them, pictured is what they look like, along with one installed on one of my rental cars.
