    Beer Can Wing Sprints

I'm showing these old cars I built back in the 80's when I had a 4 lane banked try-oval in my garage that I would raise and lower with a pulley system and an electric winch I had made up....I had some old VHS video of it ....But any way Rick Weld one of the Weld Brothers (Weld Wheels) was the inspiration of my frame designs..I had made Rick a home oval track back then and the rest is history...
I started out this hobby back in 1964 at 11 yrs. old and hade built many contraptions back then ...Scratch building cars was a lot of fun back then...But these cars really looked real drifting through the turns and shooting down the straight....These were designed to take a beating ....

He started with a Sprints Plus chassis that REH sold and added the Piano wire to make the cage.

Sprints Plus chassis are still available. These cars are a riot to race on ovals.

So with an oval track being resurrected at our local track Raytown International Raceway...

It looks like I have to start scratchbuilding some 1/32 sprint car frames, after I brought these in to show around, the word got out... Only the aluminum "beer can" wings will be plastic instead...A little different wire cage this time..
    .
Anticipating 10-15 frames, so I built a bending jig, also a soldering assembly jig...
I had a piece of 4'' aluminum angle, just the right length... So...

The assembly jig lets you solder the wire cage to the frame nice and square, add some bracing and then remove from the jig and solder in cross bars... Probably some more jigs to make yet...

There isn't a whole lot of pictures on the net of sprints-plus chassis build ups... To be really durable yet easily serviceable, and keep the body fully intact... Building a frame to be able to slip the body in and out of all the wire cage is a challenge...

I drilled a couple more holes in the bending jig to make nerf bars...

Another jig to mount the wing brackets and a nose bumper to protect the guide.

Any way still need to do the rear push bar-bumper...
Been working on a body profile...used another beer can..can't seem to get away from the sheet metal idea of the wear and tear peel it off and form another for the next race battle...Good ol sheet metal battle scars,... looks so less"plastic"

    The tail section....

Music wire frames and mounted body's only $75...+ shipping.....
    Does not include motor-tires-bushings-guides etc...

I built one cage from brass, but I prefer music wire...

Piano wire is lighter & stronger than brass rod but it's a bit harder to work with.
I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people who annoy me.

    Very cool.

I saw a few of Mike Spisak Sr's sprints several years ago. Amazing isn't enough of a word to describe.
