    F1 Eurosport Crown Gears

What is the best F1 Euro Crown gear out there? I know that JK have had them for a long time. However, I have noticed several new makers on the market.

How do they compare? What is the best?

    Thanks...

I use the JK gears. They work and they are around 5 dollars. The Vitula gears are 21.50 each.

Use the green JK gears with a 72 pitch 6 pinion and it'll work great. The czechs sell jk gears that are blueprinted. They cost only slightly more, but they are harder to get in the US. If you are interested in getting some of these, please pm me. Both the vitulas and the green gears are used by experts at the Worlds. All of the Czechs run the green gears. I think that Gugu does, too.

    What pitch are the Vitula?

Any particular reason the Czechs run the JK instead?

Mike, that's a good question, and I don't know the answer.

Normal ES gearing is all the same: smallest pinion available (6t 80p) and largest spur that fits (43-45). F1s are not the same. I think that it is because they are inline, and because of that there's less reason to have them revving as high as they can. (You know this, but for others reading, the rotational inertia of the arm does not stabilize a high revving in-line car like it does in a sidewinder or angle winder.)

But whatever the reason, there's little to no speed difference between the vitulas (largest crown that fits) and the much smaller jk green gears. I think in the very close F1 final last year in Kiev, Horky was running a green gear and Matti Fhyr was running a vitula, but I'm not sure of that. The TQ car, a castricone, driven by Paolo Trigillio, had a vitula for sure.

    The pinion

for the Vitula gears (33T) is the same 6 or7t/72pitch. The only problem with the Vitula-gear is that the hub is on the pinion-side, which means that the pinion has to be cut short, very short! But you can also turn down the hub, if you dare. You also have to make sure that the pinions are relatively new..

    Steen,

Good to have you join this thread! Yes, that's correct, but more importantly, can you explain why the relatively large difference in gear ratio does not produce any appreciable change in lap times for the fast guys? Do most of the fast guys run 7s with vitulas and 6s with the green gears? (This would be a similar end ratio.)

    Greg,

I do not have very much experience with the green gears, but have good result with the Vitula's. Regarding wich pinion to use ( 6 or 7) my main consideration has been the durabilty of the mesh.
I have had fine results with Vitula (33t) and a 6t pinion, and the car was running very, very fine. I have seen that in UK, even on short track, people have been running 7/30 or 7/31, but I guess this also depends on the motor and the power/wiring on the track.

they are 72 pitch, the Czechs lighten them by grinding on the hub, and I presume they probably use an indicator to select the most true ones that come out of the molds.

    I use this file

    http://www.woodcraft.com/product/200...ther-edge.aspx

to relieve the tooth profile on the green gear (make it a little deeper) for a better mesh and more meat in the tooth.
    It works!

Not to butt in on Bill's OP... but has the price of EDM pinions come down yet ?

IMO, the best 72p 7t pinion comes from Camen. Its 2mm so the armature shaft doesn't need to be cut...

I think Ron was talking about 80p 6tooth pinions we use in E32 & E24 euros.
I could be wrong but I believe I heard the 80p ARP are giving good results at much reduced cost compared to EDM pinions.
Greg N should chime in here.

    A couple of points here:

    1) Different from all other classes I know, Steen and I agree that top ISRA Worlds races run markedly different gear ratios in 1/32 F1. I've tried both and found little to no lap difference for me (a poor driver), tho the cars feel mildly differently. I use the green gears currently. Steen is faster than me, and he uses the vitulas, but Vladomir is faster than him, and he uses the green ones. :-)

    2) Note that for both crowns we're talking 2mm axles and 72 pitch pinions. Most of us (I think) use 6 tooth pinions in 1/32 F1, so we've all turned our arms down to 1.5mm. Pretty sure that most everybody uses EDM pinions. I do, but only because I have a bunch of them. I have a 72 pitch 6 tooth ARP pinion on one of my F1s, and it runs great. On the other I have a 72 pitch 6 tooth EDM, blueprinted by Horky, and it runs great, too. (Blue-printed here means checked for run-out on one of those really cool German pinion runout gauges and having the rough tooth on the pinion filed round (if you look at your EDM pinions under a magnifying glass when they are halfway new, you will see that one tooth is sharp and irregular).)

    3) The regular $5 JK green crowns run fine, but once every 3 or 4 you'll find one that is louder and doesn't last as long. I'm almost sure that they are not always totally flat and that is the reason for this. The Czech green gears are not like this. I have not had a bad one yet. I do not know if the Czech green gears are available in the US, also not what they cost, but Jim Radford would know. I presume that these are the crown gears that he was referring to above. I am not aware of Czech blue-printed vitulas for F1, but they may well exist.

    4) Bill B's idea with the little file for the stock JKs is great. I'm sure that that, plus a long run-in time on the power supply at low rpm, would fix even an out of dish green gear.

    5) I have not looked at ISRA World heavies choices of pinions in the other classes, but I'm pretty sure that they still use EDMs. Steen, please comment here. I do know that team Czech checks the run-outs of all pinions on their German run-out gauge after the pinion is soldered onto the motor, and that they always file off the burrs on the one tooth of the EDM pinions. With an n of 1, I know that at least one car of theirs came with a fabulous mesh and ran very, very quietly, and still does after I change crowns on it.

    6) Everybody uses Cahoza spurs. I've not seen anybody use a run-out gauge on these, but that doesn't mean that it's not happening.

In Latvia, I'll ask the Finns, Czechs, and Italians if they've tried non-EDM pinions in any of the ES classes and report back here. I'll bet though that most of them have plenty of nice EDMs and that most have not tried the much newer ARPs. That said, it would be unlike the Czechs and Italians not to have tested the ARPs. And my one 72 pitch 6 tooth ARP is currently running just fine.

Lastly, concerning the pinion run-out gauges: See George Russell's slot car racer thread about this. He doesn't have a pinion run-out gauge, I think, but he is a musician, and he touchs a hot iron to the tip of a running pinion briefly until the gear mesh sounds best. I think that this is intended to center the pinion, but it also likely slightly melts the spur. Either way the mesh is improved. (Please don't ask how I would do this on an F1.) :-)

    Hope this helps!

    Greg
