    PS4002FK experiences

    There is much talk about the PS4002 FK motor and whether its the solution for this category of sealed motor issues.
    Inconsistencies, failures and intermittent loss of power/brakes that we have experienced with Falcons lead to some level of disappointment.
    The PS4002 FK looks the part, but I have heard of the arm being fragile and apart from replaceable brushes no advantage.
    Keen to hear of actual real users own (not anecdotal) experiences on Flat tracks with flexi chassis under non-wing bodies.

    They have good torque and brakes.
    I had good luck with the stock brushes and springs.
    I would start out 1 tooth bigger pinion than a Falcon.

    What other "advantage" are you looking for from a $12 motor? The motor is more reliable and more consistent than the current Falcon's. It's not any faster. It's not intended to be. It's, at least partially, rebuildable.

    Just that MikeC, some reliability and consistency. Doesn't have to live forever. Its almost pointless buying cheap motors and having such a performance lottery, and then motor that runs well then suddenly runs crap/flat/no brakes etc

    I can't speak for flat track but on our 220' Engleman Grandstand they run GREAT! They are about a half second faster than falcons. We have some with over 15 races on them and they still are as strong as day one. Great brakes, great speed, great price, and great handling. The only negative I can find is they might be too fast for some just starting out.

    Been running them in Retro Cars geared 8 pinion 26, 27 or 28 crown gear ( 48 pitch ) with .790 dia rear tires. That's a roll out ratio of 4.11 to 4.43 on voltages from 12.5 volts up to 14.0 volts.

    Killer brakes.... sometimes can't dial out enough brakes on some tracks and long life.

    Have run them in JK X-25 chassis....... geared 13/43 .750" dia tires 4.41 roll out on 12.5 volts. Tried 14/44 but could feel the motor loose it's punch after 10 laps or so. Put on the 13 and dropped a tooth on the spur and it actually ran faster and stayed consistent through 2 minute runs.

    Ran them last weekend geared 12-40 ( 72 pitch ) rules called for 12 tooth pinion and .750 tires for a roll out of 4.44 on 13.8 volts. Ran good all day long. Probably would have been a bit faster at 13-43 but the rules called for 12 tooth pinions only.

    If the motors are kept in the 4.00 to 4.40 roll out ratios..... they run great. Have yet to see one fail or throw a wire or have a comm come apart.

    I have found them to run a tenth or faster when compared to a Hawk 7 motor and usually they are a couple tenths faster than a Falcon 7 motor on most tracks.

    Have seen many failures with Falcon 7's, Hawk 7's, Retro Hawks in throwing wires and always loosing or running out of brakes in most cases.

    We also ran them as "hand out" motors at the RETRO ROC race....... no failures to report of about 100 sold at the race. All were ran in the suggested roll out ratio.

    A great little motor for 14 bucks. The best 14 buck motor out there today. You can replace the brushes and springs and keep them going for a long time. I have yet to wear out the brushes in any of mine and some have several races on them and they run as strong as they did when they were first used.

    I always use Koford Big Foots or P-S Gold Dust brushes in them, but have seen several guys run the stock brushes in them with great success.

    Remember, this is the handout engine for LMP @ the 2015 USRA Nats. Speedzone in Mt Holly NJ. Track is a Engleman.

    We just ran a 2 hr. enduro with 1 min. between heats no failures and the winner had 11 regular races on that motor! Big thing is that he still had great brakes says he thinks he can get a race or two more before he replaces the brushes!

    Top top motor. At our club you can use them or a Falcon. The falcons lose their edge on a 2 nd nights racing, the PS motors go on and on. We do allow them have a BB at the can end, and this motor has only needed rebuilding once in nearly 2 yrs!! cheap, reliable and goes on and on.

    Well I got my hands on one this week, slapped it in a chassis yesterday and took it to the track today. Very impressive little motor, awesome brakes, and very grunty. I geared it 12/37 as this is all I had spare but seemed ok, maybe a little tall. I did 1000 laps today to test it, stopping at 250 to lube the axle, again at 500 to let it cool and to lube, and at 750 I gave the comm and braids a little juice. Then on to lap 1000.

    Brushes look a little worn as you can see below (especially the positive one) lap times started coming down around lap 800 (maybe as the tyres wore down the gearing and handling got better and did the fastest lap somewhere late in the peace).

    NZSCA delegates at tonight's General Meeting, voted unanimously to adopt the PS4002FK motor for our Falcon classes for 2015.

    I would have loved to run that motor, it was my choice to run it but some things take time to change?
