Mike do you worry more about gear ratio or rollout with this motor. I find that staying within the manufactures recommendations for both seems to work very well. My favorite combination is 12x42 @72P with .765 tire. What pitch gear and size tire do you run on the Ghetto Retro cars.
I've done so much with so little for so long it seems like I can do anything with nothing at all.

We run real simple 48 pitch gears in Ghetto.
I have experimented with lots of different ratios and tire sizes.
My standard setup is 10/28 with.750 tires.
These motors really take the abuse of tall gearing with the power at Fantasy Raceways.
    Pretty sure 13.6 volts.

I won the Ghetto Retro race last night at Fantasy Raceways.

Ran 10/26 gears with .720" tires.
    Rollout 3.61

Car was a rocket with good brakes.
Really good punch off the turns.

You may have already mentioned this, but what kind of track and how long are the heats?

    Thx...

Are there any Brush Hoods that are a direct replacement?

. 145' Ogilvie Hillclimb. 2 1/2 minute heats. I have run as long as 5 minutes without a problem with this setup.

I never have any problems with brushes or hardware on these things.
I honestly believe most of the bad stuff guys write about these motors are more to do with the politics of retro racing and Mike Swiss's rivalry with Ron Hershman.

I know I'm not so smart or talented to have a magical formula to avoid problems with the PS4002-FK.

    Bloody PS4002FK motors!

I dropped what I thought was a piece of ^&%$ motor into a flexi chassis yesterday and it went 3/10ths faster than any of the other 8 motors that I have been testing.

    Go figure

The guys I see having problems at out track are the ones messing with the motors.

Just break them in the way I suggested and leave them alone.
Lately I have just been super gluing the oilite in the can instead of soldering to avoid heat.

. The motor I ran last night was a used one that came out of a car a guy gave me to work on.
It sounded good on the power supply so I stuck it in one or mine. Stock brushes and springs.

There were several cars with same top end speed as mine but I got around the turns better than the other guys.

What made you think it was a POS? Had you used it before?

I had raced it previously, but it was always too slow.

    Maybe the heavier springs helped?
